Yes, you can use a tea ball or something like that. I have a thing for loose tea that is like a clamping spoon, it works like a tea bag. You don't want to just put the loose tea in the cup because it would taste awful.

Of course - just get a "tea ball", a metal ball that splits in half. Just open the ball, put in your herbs, close it, and use like you would a tea bag. You can also just put the herbs in the water, you just sort of drink around them.

i just add hot water to a little root ginger,
      so good.
nettles can be used like that, or mint leaves.

      what are you, stupid?

Of course you can…. it's good fun and tastes soooooo much better just knowing you made if from scratch. You can use a 'tea ball' like mentioned, or make the tea in a pot then pour it through a strainer to serve, but personally I don't usually tend to bother, being quite happy to have a few bits and pieces floating around in my cup! In some countries the tea is served with the fresh leaves loose in the cup - this is what is expected and I think it looks lovely, especially when it's in a clear glass cup!

As well as using fresh herbs, you can buy dried herbs loose at a health food store, or even dry your own that you have grown to use when not in season. Mint is always popular (there are lots of different kinds and they all work well) as is lemongrass, chamomile etc. I also enjoy sage and even lavender!

You don't have to use herbs… wild plants such as nettle and dandelion are also excellent for making tea, although for some their rather astringent taste might not be very appealing.

I also love to make tea out of fresh root ginger, it's an excellent digestive aid and also really good for colds if you drink it with lemon and sweetened with honey. For ginger tea, just chop it finely (about a teaspoon or more if you like ti strong) and boil it in a pan for a bit to let the flavour come out.

No, you definitely DON'T need teabags! I hope you enjoy and have fun making tea.
