All teas are diuretics, but that's not why they could help you lose weight. In fact, whatever amount of water you lose you should replace, so that you don't become dehydrated. Drinking water like you do is a good idea.
Green tea contains caffeine, which speeds up the metabolism. This means that the cells in the body burn more energy, and also may burn fat more effectively. But this effect of caffeine is weak, and if you change nothing else about what you eat, green tea may help you lose 2-4 pounds in a year.
Green tea is also an appetite suppressant, but that effect is also pretty weak. And the appetite will return with a vengeance if you take a break from the tea.
The main way tea may help you lose weight is by replacing other drinks (and foods) rich in calories with tea, which contains no calories. So if you drink only tea and water throughout your day, and no sodas or sugared juices, you will get much fewer calories. That may in turn help you lose weight.
In other words: The time you spend drinking tea is time you are not spending drinking unhealthy beverages.
The main reason green tea is good for you is that it contains antioxidants, healthy substances that stop your cells decaying. Drinking half a gallon a day, like you do, means that you drink enough to get the best benefits from the tea.
The antioxidants in green tea (called catechins) have been linked with preventing heart disease, cancer, and even aging. The healthiest tea of all is the white tea, which contains three times more antioxidants than green tea.
