Green Tea–does it matter bagged kind or loose for health benefit?

February 27th, 2008 · 4 Comments

Hi,

I've been drinking green tea for ages…in a bag…feeling very good about myself once i read the health benefits..yippy!

but recently, ive heard that the "baggged" lipton type green tea doesn't count..you have to drink the typical asian loose kind for the benefits to count…is this true??

thanks!!

I'd think so, because the lipton bagged kind is processed.

Lipton tea sucks! Period! It is horrible. There is not aste to it, and I assume there are no anti-oxidants as well. There are great brand teas, like Uncle Lee's and try some Chinese ones, like an anti-adiposis tea. I drink both kinds, and if you are not careful, you can get lipton quality evn in the loos-leafed ones.

I worked for Mighty Leaf Tea for many years, and am a total tea snob. Any tea that comes in a paper tea bag is just plain aweful. The process that is required to put tea into a paper tea bag crushes the tea to bits. This releases tanins which make the tea bitter. This also causes it to loose the antioxidants (the good stuff everyone wants). What you get in a paper tea bag is the absolute dregs, the bottom of the barrel, tea dust.

The fact is, all kinds of tea are good for you. Green tea is known to be higher in antioxidants than black tea, but even black tea has those wonderful antioxidants. White tea is even better. The difference between green tea and black tea has to do with the length of time and method that it is dried and processed. Black tea on one end of the scale, white tea on the other, green somewhere in the middle. Herbals are actually not tea, (which makes them caffeine free) but they can be high in antioxidants too. My personal favorite herbal is Rooibos (often called red tea). It is actually higher in antioxidants than green tea. And it tastes strong like a black tea, is caffeine free, and a great "tea" to have in the evening. It tasts nice iced too.

(I don't work there anymore, so this info is just cause I'm a tea snob)

You know, a cup of tea sounds nice right now…
