Green Tea Pill vs. Green Tea Extract Pill?

July 24th, 2008 · 2 Comments

Does anyone know the difference? Right now I am taking regular green tea pills (not extract) which contain 500 mg. of dried green tea leaf. What is the difference between this and green tea extract? Are there more health benefits to one than to the other?

Extract is usually more powerful, however if you are trying to lose weight with these pills it won't matter, it doesn't work.

From the answer below, I never said it didn't raise your metabolism (nor did I say it didn't have anti-oxidents) however, if you sit around eat like you usually do and take these pills it will do nothing for you.

And the gain from the green tea for your metabolism is minimal at best according to that study. You will not lose an extra 10 (or even 5 pounds) taking those pills.

But yes, if you do not get anti-oxidents any other way (tomatoes, fruits, etc) than go ahead and take the pills. However food is always better than supps.

Extract is more potent because its just the essential oils where all the good stuff is.

Contrary to the other answerer, catechins, the powerful antioxidants found in green tea, are known to increase metabolism. In a 12-week study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, participants who consumed 690 milligrams of catechins from green tea daily had significantly lower body-mass indexes and smaller waist measurements than those in the control group.

Its not a 'miracle weight loss' pill, but it can help. Plus, all the antioxidants help your immune system, so I personally recommend it.
