my doctor suggested not to drink them when i was pregnant because they dont know the side effects of herbal teas.

Cough drops yes, teas though are not recommended because of the levels of caffiene, which can be associated with miscarriage.

Herbal tea was suggested to me, by my doctor.
Chamomile and peppermint were remedies for illness, unfortunately not for me!

Don't do any of the above if you think you may be pregnant, because not all the ingredients in herbal tea preparations are listed on the labels - and even some of the accepted ingredients can cause an abortion.

The effects of herbal tea are not well known, but until more is found out, it is safest to stay away from or limit your intake of herbal teas, unless recommended by your doctor.

Herbal tea is something a lot of people are wary of in pregnancy, partly because of the caffiene and partly because herbs can sometimes affect the body.

My doctor told me unmedicated cough drops are fine, so I'm not exactly sure what he meant by that, possibly non menthol type? I would check with a doctor or advice nurse, you should be able to just call one if you have insurance, and ask about specific brands and types of tea and cough drops.

Herbal teas - more precisely called herbal infusions - do not contain caffeine. So no worries there.

Some herbal teas can be used medicinally, but one cup of tea every now and then will not be strong enough to do any harm. If you are drinking herbal tea every day, or even several cups of tea a day, you want to check it out to make sure it is ok during pregnancy. Drink herbal teas made by a reputable company - such as Traditional Medicinals - and you can be sure that the contents are correctly listed on the label.

Some herbs you should stay away from during pregnancy - licorice, golden seal, saw palmetto, and blue & black cohosh. You can get more information here:

My point is, herbs can be potent, but only if you take them in "medicinal" doses - small amounts in tea or like you would use in cooking should not be harmful in any way.

I love green tea……..drank it early pregnancy and then decided to look up if it was safe.

Apparently green tea is really unsafe.

I personally would research the type of tea you would be drinking.
